tonight: for moiraandserenityandkaitlinandkennedyandzachary and the little ones

“All, with one consent, praise newborn gawds, though they are made and molded of things past.”
-William Shakespeare

I am in repair.
-John Mayer

if it started (you) with so much challenge
then you yielded not to defeat
little though you were
small though you are

if your hand of cards look impossible
then you played and play valiantly
little though you were
small though you are

if they held their breaths for miracles
(“please, please, please,”
their chests rose and fell in rhythm)
then you gave and gave and gave
little though you were
small though you are
providence held your hand
your chest rose and fell in rhythm
and sometimes your mommy cried
and sometimes your daddy stayed beside you
(for six whole months, you and him!)
little though he was to help you
small though you are
your fragility, our disbelief
joined in a deep sigh
your mounting improvement, our reprieve:
you are the miracle
this i can see

little though you were
small though you are
little though i am
small i remain
if humbled (by you)
then amazed at your being, better:
this, God’s grace
